There are a number of rules and notification requirements related to the breeding of greyhounds.
The purpose of these requirements is to ensure that greyhounds are well looked after and that people who invest in greyhounds are protected.
Breeding females
Step one: DNA testing
Before a female greyhound can be registered for breeding, she must be DNA tested by Greyhounds Australasia.
This test only needs to be performed once in the female’s life, prior to the first mating, and is a simple mouth swab.
Further information on DNA testing as well as the application form, can be found on the Greyhounds Australasia website.
Step two: Registration
Once GWIC receive the results of the DNA test, the greyhound will need to be registered as a breeding female.
An application to register a greyhound as a breeding female will need to be completed. The application form includes a health and fitness certificate that must be completed by a registered veterinarian.
To be eligible for this registration, the female greyhound must:
- Be named
- Be microchipped
- Have completed DNA testing
- Have a C5 vaccination administered within the last 12 months and a copy of her vaccination certificate
-
Be no more than 8 years of age and not have had three litters already.
Participant breeder registration
Participants wanting to breed greyhounds must register with GWIC as either a Breeder–Owner or a Breeder-Whelper before a greyhound can be registered or served.
Only a Breeder-Whelper can whelp a litter.
If the owner of a greyhound is not a registered breeder but has arranged for a registered breeder to whelp the litter, a breeding lease will need to be completed and submitted to GWIC before the greyhound can be served.
Exemptions
Under R57(2) and R58(2) of the Greyhound Racing Rules, breeding females over eight years of age and/or have whelped three litters are not permitted to be served unless an exemption is approved by GWIC.
For an exemption to be considered, breeding exemption application must be completed and submitted with a copy of the greyhound’s current C5 vaccination certificate (if applicable).
The breeding exemption application includes a health and fitness certificate that must be completed by a registered veterinarian.
An approved exemption permits a breeding female to have one additional service within 120 days from the date of the health and fitness certificate.
Under R57(1) and R58(1) of the Greyhound Racing Rules, a breeding exemption will not be considered by GWIC if a breeding female is aged 10 years or older and/or has whelped five (5) litters.
