In 2021, the NSW Government granted the Commission $3.59 million to develop and implement a world-first e-Tracking system to help monitor the location and welfare of all greyhounds registered in NSW.

The digital e-Tracking system was launched on 31 May 2022, when a randomly selected group of participants had their greyhounds checked-in.

Since then, eTracking has evolved to provide NSW with the most accurate greyhound register in Australia, if not the world.

By enhancing visibility and accountability, eTracking helps ensure that no New South Wales registered greyhound goes unaccounted for, supporting better welfare outcomes and industry transparency.

How eTracking works

eTracking enables the Commission to maintain accurate, up-to-date records of each greyhound’s location and status.

Under the eTracking framework, all NSW registered greyhounds are required to have contact (check-in) with the Commission within a prescribed timeframe.

This requirement also applies to greyhounds registered in NSW, but located interstate.

Racing greyhounds are required to check-in with the Commission every six months, while pre-racing (unnamed) and retired greyhounds must check-in annually.

When a greyhound is approaching its check-in due date, the Commission will send the greyhound's custodian a reminder via SMS and email asking them to arrange for the greyhound to be checked-in.

Why eTracking matters

The eTracking system provides the Commission with crucial industry oversight, enhancing its ability to protect the welfare of greyhounds and integrity of the sport.

It helps to ensure that the New South Wales greyhound racing industry is the most transparent in the world and in doing so, serves to elevate community confidence.

How to check-in a greyhound

There are a number of ways through which a greyhound can be checked-in:

  • The greyhound is scanned at an Approved Check-In Location

  • The greyhound starts in a NSW or interstate race meeting

  • A current vaccination certificate relating to the greyhound is submitted

  • A breeding application relating to the greyhound is submitted

  • A Whelping Notice relating to the greyhound is submitted

  • The greyhound is microchipped

  • A veterinary health and fitness certificate relating to the greyhound is submitted

  • The greyhound is scanned by a GWIC Inspector during a kennel inspection

  • A change in ownership of the greyhound is approved

  • A kennel or trainer transfer relating to the greyhound is approved

  • A Retirement Notification relating to the greyhound is approved

  • Naming the greyhound

  • A breeding/racing lease relating to the greyhound is approved

  • DNA test results for the greyhound are received

Other methods of check-in may be accepted by the Commission on a case-by-case basis.
